these thoughts are so foreign to me. granted, they are perfectly legitimate feelings/opinions/whatever… but in the city where i grew up the pits were so fucking respectful. i look back at all of the moshpits i jumped into in jr high and highschool and for every injury i remember 5 times where someone looked out for me or made sure i was doing okay (i had asthma). we were a small crew. if you knew one of us you knew all of us. i guess maybe we skanked more than moshed… but that’s because no one like’s a bruised rib, and everyone would rather have a good time dancing & rocking out than being hurt or taking care of someone who got hurt (although there were still plenty of injuries… mostly from skating in the parking lot.)
i guess i grew up with a “privileged punk scene” (nothing to do with race, our crew was small & there were plenty of non-white people) because everyone got introduced to the idea of collective awareness and caught on to it very quickly. i guess i’m ignorant to punk rock activity elsewhere, but it makes me really sad that “moshpit” still means “keep out unless you’re okay with getting hurt”. the real world hurts enough as is, punk should be an alliance against that bullshit.
